A Slice of San Sebastián

Known around the world, Basque Cheesecake has become a social media sensation with countless versions popping up globally. There is nothing more universally Basque right now than our cheesecake. And it all began right here in San Sebastian – with a double S. Plus, it captures the essence of our people: a bit rough around the edges but sweet and soft on the inside.

It all started in the 90s at in the Old Town of San Sebastian. The cheesecake became part of the pintxo route. It slowly gained local fame, one slice at a time, before going on to conquer the world. Even foreign chefs who frequent San Sebastian have fallen head over heels for our Basque Cheesecake, often recreating it in their own countries. It all grew exponentially when The New York Times chose Basque cheesecake as ‘Flavor of the Year’ for 2021.
